As most Americans are aware, Pres. Donald Trump issued a series of Executive Orders within the first few days after his inauguration in 2025. Many organizations are beginning to issue statements of guidance for their members.
For example, the Episcopal Church of American has issued the following guidance:
- Church members should advocate with Congress to protect Dreamers
- Stand against mass deportations
- Support orderly border management that respects the right of asylum
- Support programs that protect vulnerable people
- Speak out against anti-immigrant rhetoric and actions.
Similarly, the National Council of Nonprofits listed Executive Orders that it said are likely to be challenged in courts. These are actions:
- Directing federal agencies to remove undocumented people
- Requiring the government to review all federal grants and contacts to nonprofits working with “illegals” and claw back funding for such grants and contracts
- Creating statewide detention centers
- Blocking funding for “sanctuary cities”
- Ensuring no public benefits for undocumented people
- Challenging birthright citizenship (this action has already been opposed in court as unconstitutional by 18 State Attorney Generals).
In addition, former Colorado State Senator Linda Newell has posted several items she will and will not do. She writes that some people say that everyone should “work together” with Trump because he won the election. Regarding immigration, Newell writes that she will not “work together:”
- To build a weal
- To persecute Muslims
- To shut out refugees from other countries
- To remove civic rights from anyone.
- To give the Ku Klux Klan, the Nazi Party and white supremacists a seat at the table, or to normalize their hatred.
Instead, Newell writes, “This is my line, and I am drawing it.
- I WILL stand for honesty, love, respect for all living beings. . .
- I WILL use my voice and my hands to reach out to the uninformed and to anyone who will listen.”
She states that “winning,” “being great again, “rich” or even “beautiful” are nothing. . . when others are sacrificed to glorify their existence.
